September is coming up, and we've got our fall schedule of classes lined up for you! All of these take place at the Victoria Arts Connection studio, 2750 Quadra (Map).
- Swing 1 starts on Sunday September 19th. You don't need a partner nor do you need any experience for our beginner dance series. We remember what it was like to be a beginner, and we'll make it both fun and easy for you to start! Class time is from 7:35pm to 9pm until October 31st. There is no lesson on October 10th for Thanksgiving.
- Swing 3 begins on Wednesday September 22nd. Although a partner isn't required, you'll need some swing experience under your belt such as Swing 2 or Balboa 1. If in doubt, call us at (250) 885-4639 for instructor permission. We'll be working on lindy hop fundamentals, the shim sham, and some more advanced charleston. Class time is 8pm to 9:30pm until October 27th.
In the specialty class department, we have a couple of great offerings for you:
- It's been a while since Kyle taught one of his famous Musicality classes, so he and Christabel will hook you up. You know you're dancing to the beat - but are you really dancing to the music? Not sure? This class is for you. Whether you lead or follow, this ultra-fun three-week series will feature a blend of exercises and playtime that will open your ears and get you dancing to the music in ways you didn't know you could. 6pm to 7:25pm starting on Sunday September 19th until October 3rd.
- Fun Tricks is a new four-week series where you can learn some really neat moves. These are not going to be aerials, but instead cool things to do on the social dance floor. No partner required, 8:15pm to 9:45pm from Tuesday September 28th to October 19th.
Finally, students rejoice! We've made a huge upgrade to our student discount! It's now $20 and it also stacks with our member discount.

Here's the skinny on our July-August round of classes: - Swing 1 begins on Wednesday July 7th. You need neither a partner nor experience for this beginner series! It will run from 6:30pm to 7:55pm until August 11th.
- Swing 2 starts up on Wednesday July 7th as well. This is our recommended entry point for anybody who has prior dance experience. It's also the next step if you've completed our Swing 1. This series will take place from 8:05pm to 9:30pm until August 11th.
- Balboa 1 begins on Tuesday July 6th. This is another second-level class, so you'll need to have either Swing 1 or some other dance experience under your belt. Class time is 7:30pm to 9pm until August 10th.
- Showtime is this summer's specialty class, starting on Thursday July 8th. This is a fourth-level class - you should have completed our Swing 3 or have some serious swing dancing experience. If in doubt, you can request instructor permission at 250-885-4639. Here's the deal with this class: we're going to teach you a routine (aerials and all) and then get you to perform it! Unlike our other classes, you'll need to bring your own partner for Showtime. It runs from 7:30pm to 9:30pm until August 12th.

A huge thank you to Andrea Boyes for being such a fun and amazing partner for the fourth Stars on Stage! Christabel and I threw difficult dance moves and aerials at her, and she just soaked it all up. We rocked the house last night. The Victoria Hot Jazz Jubilee was amazing! It inhabited that wonderful intersection of great people, great atmosphere, and great music.
If you're looking for your next fix of live music, we're going to have an actual big band at Nothin' But Swing on Saturday, June 5th!

The calendar and registration page have been updated with April swing info!
Highlights:
1) Live band at Nothin' But Swing on Saturday March 27th!
2) Swing 1, Swing 2, Swing 3, and Swing 5 start the week of April 11th.
3) Nothin' But Swing is closed on Satuday April 17th because we will all be dancing at the Sidney Hot Jazz Jubilee. Come join us. :)

Here's your summary of upcoming events for March!
1) Due to ridiculously high demand for more aerials (a petition!), we are replacing the previously scheduled Compete class with a second round of flippy stuff. This Sunday March 7th will be an open assisted practice specifically for aerials (6pm-7:25 at VAC for $5). The following two Sundays - the 14th and 21st - will be a two week extension of Aerials. If you'd like to get in on the action, it will cost $40 regular, $35 for members.
2) The last Saturday of this month will be a double-plus special Nothin' But Swing. Not only will we have a live band, but there will also be the first annual Swing-of-War competition! So mark Saturday March 27th on your calendar in large, friendly letters.
3) With the recent server move for redhotswing.com, we've lost a few forum posts and some recent site accounts. If your account was lost, go ahead and re-create it. If you encounter any other glitches, please don't panic. :D (and maybe let me know!)

Five years... that's a long time. Worth celebrating, even! So we're going to celebrate Red Hot Swing's five year anniversary on November 28th & 29th with live music, performance, workshops, and special guests.
It all starts at Nothin' But Swing on Saturday Nov 28th, where we'll have Dixieland Express whip us into a joyous frenzy. That means a top-notch seven-piece dixieland band will be playing for us. We don't mess around when it comes to live music. You'll also get to see the students currently in our Showtime class perform their new routine!
Then on Sunday the 29th, we're putting on a three-lesson lindy hop workshop featuring organic, locally-grown instructors. They're certified pesticide free! You'll learn some new ways to approach your lindy fundamentals, pick up some fancy new footwork, and tie it all together with the great music that makes us want to dance. This workshop is going to be accessible to a wide range of students, so if you've taken Swing 2 or higher with Red Hot Swing or the UVic Swing Club's advanced beginner series, you're good to go. When in doubt, give us a ring at (250) 885-4639 for instructor permission. This Lindy Done Local workshop will take place at the Victoria Arts Connection studio, 2750 Quadra Street (map).
If you haven't participated in our one-day workshops before, you should be aware that we intend to feed you at half-time. We here at Red Hot Swing believe firmly in eating, and we like to share our values. :) Speaking of sharing, the proceeds from this workshop will be split evenly with the Swing Dance Association of Victoria non-profit society, to help fund great events like band nights for everyone to enjoy.
Finally, the big finale for the whole weekend is the first lesson of a long-awaited class: we're doing a two-week advanced balboa series on November 29th and December 6th at VAC. Even better, we've invited Joel & Louise Schwarz to come over and teach the first class. They're a pair of fabulous dancers from Vancouver, amazing teachers, and all-around excellent people. Seriously, this is going to be an *advanced* balboa class... if your bal basics are really solid, this class is for you. Ordinarily this class would start at 6pm, but we bumped it forward to 4:15pm on the 29th so Joel & Louise can catch a reasonable ferry back home.
