There's a fair amount of dance stuff going on this month! Here's the scoop for February 2010.
Tuesday February 2nd is our second assisted practice. The one we held last week was well-attended and popular, so we're going to run them on the 9th and 16th as well. Come out to dance, practice, socialize, and ask teachers to help you with whatever you'd like. You CAN work on aerials here as well! 8pm - 9:30 at Victoria Arts Connection (2750 Quadra).
This Friday the 5th is the first Friday of the month, which means we're at Swing City. Big venue, nice floor, and a bar! It's been *three months* since the last time Red Hot Swing was in there, so come enjoy the longest-running swing venue in Victoria. 8pm - 12 at the Edelweiss Club (108 Niagara) with a free drop-in beginner lesson until 9pm; no partner or experience needed.
We have FOUR sessions of classes at VAC (2750 Quadra) starting up in the second half of February:
1) Our beginner series is Swing 1, which will run from 8pm - 9:30pm, Tuesdays Feb 23rd to Mar 30th. You need neither a partner nor experience to enjoy these lessons.
2) Our second-level class will be Balboa 1 from 8pm - 9:30pm on Wednesdays Feb 24th to Mar 31st. You don't need a partner, but some partner dance experience is required. If you've ever wanted to avoid bumping into other couples, or to learn to dance to fast music with ease, then balboa fits your bill.
3) Flippy stuff! We know how much fun it is to do the flippy stuff, so we're putting on a two-week Aerials class from 6pm - 7:25pm, Sundays Feb 21st to Feb 28th (partner IS required). Flippy stuff! Fun, fun, fun. :)
4) Our upper-level class will be Swing 4 from 7:35pm - 9:00pm, Sundays Feb 21st to Mar 28th. This is basically like a weekend workshop, except spread out over 6 weeks so you can retain all the cool pieces more easily! If you're planning on doing our Swing 5 in April... this is the prerequisite.
And of course, the Nothin' But Swing dance is still knocking people's socks off every Saturday night. 8:30pm - 12:30 at St. John's Hall (925 Balmoral). Drop-in beginner lesson until 9:15, and once again no partner or experience necessary!
Whew! Exciting month. :)

We're holding a directed practice from 8pm to 9:30 on Tuesday January 26th at Victoria Arts Connection (2750 Quadra).
But what's a directed practice, sav?
We'll play music for you to dance, and there will be two instructors on hand to help you with whatever you'd like to work on.
There is a $5 drop-in fee, and if it's a popular event we can do them again in the future.

Our January session is up and registration is now open! We will be offering:
Swing 1 on Sundays from 6:00pm to 7:25 (starts Jan 10th)
Swing 2 on Wednesdays from 8:00pm to 9:30 (starts Jan 13th)
Swing 3 on Sundays from 7:35pm to 9:00 (starts Jan 10th)
... and possibly a fourth class on Tuesday evenings. Stay tuned!

Last night's dance was ridiculously fun! Thank you so much for coming out and celebrating with us. :)
We had a number of people asking about lessons, and they'll be starting up in January. I'll have exact dates and times up within the week. In the meantime, keep coming out to Nothin' But Swing every Saturday night!

Red Hot Swing 5-year Anniversary Weekend (Nov 28th & 29th) |

Five years... that's a long time. Worth celebrating, even! So we're going to celebrate Red Hot Swing's five year anniversary on November 28th & 29th with live music, performance, workshops, and special guests.
It all starts at Nothin' But Swing on Saturday Nov 28th, where we'll have Dixieland Express whip us into a joyous frenzy. That means a top-notch seven-piece dixieland band will be playing for us. We don't mess around when it comes to live music. You'll also get to see the students currently in our Showtime class perform their new routine!
Then on Sunday the 29th, we're putting on a three-lesson lindy hop workshop featuring organic, locally-grown instructors. They're certified pesticide free! You'll learn some new ways to approach your lindy fundamentals, pick up some fancy new footwork, and tie it all together with the great music that makes us want to dance. This workshop is going to be accessible to a wide range of students, so if you've taken Swing 2 or higher with Red Hot Swing or the UVic Swing Club's advanced beginner series, you're good to go. When in doubt, give us a ring at (250) 885-4639 for instructor permission. This Lindy Done Local workshop will take place at the Victoria Arts Connection studio, 2750 Quadra Street (map).
If you haven't participated in our one-day workshops before, you should be aware that we intend to feed you at half-time. We here at Red Hot Swing believe firmly in eating, and we like to share our values. :) Speaking of sharing, the proceeds from this workshop will be split evenly with the Swing Dance Association of Victoria non-profit society, to help fund great events like band nights for everyone to enjoy.
Finally, the big finale for the whole weekend is the first lesson of a long-awaited class: we're doing a two-week advanced balboa series on November 29th and December 6th at VAC. Even better, we've invited Joel & Louise Schwarz to come over and teach the first class. They're a pair of fabulous dancers from Vancouver, amazing teachers, and all-around excellent people. Seriously, this is going to be an *advanced* balboa class... if your bal basics are really solid, this class is for you. Ordinarily this class would start at 6pm, but we bumped it forward to 4:15pm on the 29th so Joel & Louise can catch a reasonable ferry back home.

Showtime class starts tonight! (Sun. Oct. 18th)
At 6pm tonight, we'll begin teaching the routine you'll get to perform at the Red Hot Swing 5 year anniversary party on Saturday November 28th. Good times. :)
Coming up soon, we also have Swing 1 and Swing 2 starting the first week of November (on the 4th and 1st, respectively). If you're interested in learning to dance, there's less than two weeks until those classes start up. As usual, no partner is necessary for our lessons, and you don't even need any experience to enjoy Swing 1.

Due to an unfortunate scheduling conflict there is no dance at Nothin' But Swing this Saturday September 26th. We will be back as usual the week after!
The registration pages are up for our next set of classes. Our next round of beginner classes begins on Wednesday November 4th from 8pm to 9:30 at Victoria Arts Connection, 2750 Quadra Street (map). You don't need a partner nor do you need any experience to enjoy our Swing 1 series. Over six weeks you'll learn to dance to a variety of musical styles and speeds. If you'd like to try before you buy, come check out the drop-in lesson at Nothin' But Swing on a Saturday night to get a sampler.
Swing 2 will start on Sunday November 1st from 7:35pm to 9 at Victoria Arts Connection. If you've done Swing 1 with us, then this is the next class you'll want to take. You'll learn a substantial quantity of new moves to give you more stuff to do when you're out dancing, as well as continue to improve your fundamental technique. If you haven't done our Swing 1 but have done a fair amount of dancing elsewhere, this is a good spot to jump into our classes.
Coming up soon we will have something new called Showtime! We're going to teach you a fun routine over six weeks, which you will then perform at Nothin' But Swing when the series is over. There will be an emphasis on musicality and socially-leadable moves, with some neat tricks as well. Showtime starts at 6pm on Sunday October 18th in the Victoria Arts Connection studio. You will need to have taken Swing 3 with Red Hot Swing in order to take Showtime or seek instructor permission (250-885-4639).

The registration is up for the Swing 1 and Swing 3 starting in September!
Our beginner series of Swing 1 starts on Sunday September 13th, running from 7:35pm to 9:00pm. It will go through to October 25th, with a little break on October 11th for Thanksgiving. You don't need a partner and you don't need any experience to enjoy this class.
Swing 3 will run on Wednesdays from September 16th until October 21st. Class time is 8:00pm to 9:30pm. You don't need a partner, but some lindy hop experience is a must for this class.
Both of those series will take place in the Victoria Dance Connection studio at 2750 Quadra (map).
There are also plans in the making for a third super-secret class in September... to be announced soon!
