We've got it all: a drop-in beginner lesson kicks off the night (no partner or experience necessary), a nice big dance floor in an all-ages venue, a pile of dancers with loads of energy, and five of Victoria's best jazz musicians.
Death By Dixie is Charles Gates on drums, Bod Cadwallader on trombone, Clark Brendon on bass, Al Pease on clarinet/saxophone, and Tom Vickery on piano. These gents know how to play music that makes you want to dance, and they'll be playing it until well after midnight.
Time: lesson begins at 8:30pm Where: 925 Balmoral Rd (map) Cover: $13 for adults, $12 for members, and $10 for students.
See you there! -sav

There's a lot of stuff going on right now in the Victoria swing scene!
For starters, you may have seen us on CHEK's Island 30 program on Friday, May 15th. If that spot brought you to this site, welcome! You're in the right place.
The purpose of that interview was to let people know that we are entering a float into the Victoria Day Parade on Monday May 18th. If you want to see some honest to goodness dancing in the street, come down and check us out!
If you're pumped up about learning how to do this stuff, we've got a six-week beginner series starting up on Wednesday evenings as of June 10th. Swing 1 begins at 8pm and runs until 9:30 at Victoria Arts Connection (2750 Quadra: lots of parking + AC = yay!). You should have plenty of time to grab dinner before we help you celebrate the end of hump day. :) You can register now to reserve your spot in the class.
Hey - if you're raring to get started right away, you can come out to our weekly Saturday night swing dance, Nothin' But Swing. There's a drop-in beginner dance lesson from 8:30pm to 9:15pm, followed by great dance music until 12:30am. You don't need a partner, nor do you need any experience - just come out and give it a whirl!
We also have a two-week series of Swing 3.14 starting this Sunday May 17th. We'll help you brush up on your lindy hop basics and give you some fun footwork variations. It will be a good way to prepare you for Camp Jitterbug or the long-awaited Swing 4. That series will start up on Wednesday June 10th as well, running from 6:30pm to 8pm. If you've done Swing 4 before with us, you might want to come repeat it because we're revamping a lot of the material! You can register for Swing Pi & Swing 4 online. -sav

Red Hot Swing is teaching a two-week session of Swing Pi on Sundays May 17th and May 24th, 7:30pm to 9pm.
What's Swing Pi? Well, aside from being slightly irrational, it's completely practical! It's a way for you to brush up on (and speed up) your lindy hop basics and learn some fun new footwork variations before Camp Jitterbug and Swing 4 begins.
I'm just heading out the door now, but registration will be up tonight! Registration is now open! -sav
ps - Beginners, you have not been forgotten. Swing 1 is imminent as well!

Frankie Manning, May 26 1914 - April 27, 2009 |

As Kyle said in our forums:
Friends, as many of you have already heard, Frankie Manning passed away early this morning.
Frankie
has been an inspiration to thousands of dancers around the world. But
he taught more than just dancing. His was a message of love, sharing,
respect for one another, and an appreciation of life.
Let us
carry on his memory in the way he would have us do so - by continuing
to dance this wonderful thing we call the Lindy Hop. Let us keep his
memory alive in every swing out we do.

Stopgap Swing is running full steam ahead every Saturday evening, and we've had a blast dancing in the new digs at Saint John's Hall! Now that we're getting settled in, Red Hot Swing will start teaching regular series of lessons before the dance begins.
We've had people asking for a session of Swing 2 for quite some time now, and I'm pleased to announce that we are offering it at Saint John's Hall starting on February 7th! Lessons start at 6:30pm and go until 8pm, from February 7th through to March 14th.
We know that it can be tricky to schedule a dance class for every Saturday, so we'll be trying out a new drop-in system for this session of Swing 2. If you can only make some of the lessons, you'll be able to pay at the door each time you come. $20 per class for non-members, $15 for members.
Register now for Swing 2, and we'll see you on the dance floor! -sav

Saint John's Hall downtown! Red Hot Swing will teach a free drop-in beginner
lesson from 8:30pm to 9:15pm (no partner or experience necessary).
After the lesson, we'll be bringing you a fresh variety of swing DJs
every week.

Halloween dance at Swing City & November classes |
|
|
By savage on

A really quick update as I head out the door for the day: (ie more info later)
1) We have a killer band at Swing City this Friday for Halloween! (Think Flying Saucers with Toni Blodgett on piano.) There will also be a costume contest, a special dance contest, a Red Hot Swing drop-in beginner lesson, and I'll be doing a rare stint as the DJ between band sets. We'll also be open later than usual so you can get more dance on! Cover's $12.
2) Our November session of classes is up on the registration page. Starting on Sunday November 9th we've got a 6-week series of Balboa 1 as well a series of three brand-new specialty classes: Jam Circles (Nov 9 - 16), Blues (Nov 23 - Dec 7), and Partner Stealing (Dec 14). I'll give more info on them when I get home later.
I haven't yet updated the payment page to accomodate individual specialty classes. However, if you're going to take all three of the specialty series there is a package price for the usual price for one of our six-week series. (So you can go ahead and pay online if you're doing the whole shebang.)
More to come later! -sav

Our domain name, redhotswing.com, expired on Friday. I renewed it
immediately, but apparently it took a while to get processed. One
stressed-out weekend later, we're back. I was very worried that
someone would buy it out from under us while it was down.
